"Strategic partner" is another phrase that has developed a life of its own. Perhaps a strategic partner is a major customer or supplier, perhaps an entity further up the supply chain or down the reseller network, perhaps a complementary product line.

JV Example

This is an example of a very successful international joint venture.

A major semiconductor manufacturer did a joint venture with a start-up design house developing a technology whose potential the chip company saw ahead of the market.

The manufacturer invested in the start-up to help speed its product development.

As a consequence of its investment, it obtained preferential access to the design house's new products developed with the investment.

Its end-product knowledge and market sensitivity helped guide the direction of the design house's R&D efforts.

After viewing the initial commercial success of these new design-house products, the chip company acquired the design house...

...a real win-win.
